## Guidance and runtime, working together

OpenClaw works with XMemo on two layers. The @xmemo/xmemo Skill provides proactive recall guidance, decision workflows, and session checkpoint discipline. The @xmemo/openclaw-memory Plugin on ClawHub binds underlying tools to the XMemo runtime.

## Recommended verification path

After setup, confirm that the connection is active with these steps:

- Start a session and invoke proactive recall to confirm project context is returned.
- Record a test decision and verify that it persists durably.
- Check session checkpoint status at handoff to confirm state integrity.

## OpenClaw memory workflows

Workflows group actions by outcome across OpenClaw sessions:

- Recall and memory: Search, store, update, or forget durable memories within OpenClaw, through either explicit operations or native active recall.
- Plan and continuity: Create, list, and complete TODOs, record timeline events, and save or restore restart snapshots.
- Governance and finance: Review Ledger monthly summaries and audit events (requires additional scope).
- Resilience: A short-lived recall cache and transient write outbox keep operations functional during brief network gaps.

## Setup options

The recommended path installs both the Skill and the Plugin on your local machine:

- Personal desktop: Install @xmemo/client, log in, then install @xmemo/xmemo skill and @xmemo/openclaw-memory plugin from ClawHub.
- Service or shared host: Headless runner reading XMEMO_KEY from the environment.

## Permissions and data boundaries

Every operation is limited to the signed-in user's authorized XMemo workspace. Storage and retention follow account policies, and users retain complete control over their durable memory lifecycle.

## OpenClaw

Direct client: configure in ~/.openclaw/openclaw.json with XMEMO_KEY in the environment. Run npx @xmemo/client mcp add openclaw to install automatically.
